In an unprecedented event, President’s Cup held last week at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica, became a true spectacle of athletic prowess and international camaraderie. More than 1200 athletes from 33 different countries gathered to compete in Poomsae and Kyorugi, in an event that promised to be exciting from the beginning.
On Thursday, March 14, the Poomsae athletes opened the competition in a display of grace and precision. Cadet, Junior and Senior categories faced off from 8:00 a.m., kicking off a series of competitions that would keep the public in suspense throughout the weekend.
The president of the Pan American Taekwondo Union, Juan Manuel Lopez, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the event: “We are delighted to see how the President’s Cup continues to grow every year. The participation of 33 countries is a testimony to the growing interest and passion for this sport in our region.”
On Friday, March 15, the focus shifted to sparring, where the senior athletes showed their skill and determination on the tatami. On Saturday, March 16, the Cadet, Infantil, Junior and TK3 categories kept up the intensity of the competition, culminating in an exciting closing on Sunday, March 17 with the “Festival of Color Belts”.
This tournament, classified as G-2, was not only a stage for the showcase of talent, but also had important implications for the future of the competitors. “The President’s Cup not only offers a high-level sporting spectacle, but also awards world ranking points and provides quotas for the first places in the senior divisions,” explained Lopez.
In addition, the importance of the event was reflected in the opportunities it offered for future championships. First and second place winners in the cadet and junior divisions got places for the Pan American Championship to be held in July 2024 in Querétaro, Mexico, thus consolidating the relevance of the President’s Cup in the international taekwondo circuit.
