A research paper published in March in the Journal of Converging Sport and Exercise Sciences has garnered attention for its outstanding cultural values. Dr. Jeon Minwoo from Kyung Hee University and Professor Kim Naye from Shinhan University jointly authored the paper titled “Discovering Hope through Taekwondo: Implications of the Competition Participation Process of Ukrainian Poomsae Athletes during War.”

This study sheds light on the journey of Ukrainian Poomsae athletes who found hope amidst the warbetween Russia and Ukraine through qualitative research. It explores the courage and hope of those who participate in competitions despite being victims of the Russo-Ukrainian War, examining the situation of Ukrainian Taekwondo athletes.

Participants in the study demonstrate efforts to transcend international relations through Taekwondo even amidst the difficulties caused by the war, discussing the role that Taekwondo can play in practicing humanitarian values.

Dr. Jeon Minwoo and Professor Kim Naye stated, “The stories of Ukrainian Poomsae athletes remind us of the tragedies of the Ukraine war while also giving us hope and courage.” This study calls for further investigation into more cases and institutional discussions to support Taekwondo practitioners, as well as raises the need for research on the role Taekwondo can play in international relations.
